The Consortium hidden service featured 15,000 users, including more than 100 verified RAMP dealers who confirmed their identity with a PGP key. For listings with a holding and placeholder price, we searched for the same product from the same vendor to find a replacement price. Hydra Market, which started operating on the encrypted and anonymous dark web in 2015, made up 80% of darknet sales and brought in about $5.2 billion in cryptocurrency, according to the U.S. Fraud shops typically sell stolen data like credit card information or other personal information from hacks and leaks. Registration data, legal documents, and guidelines indicating buyer and seller rights and obligations are also listed here (Karimov & Brengman, 2014).

While executing search warrants in New Jersey and New York, federal law enforcement officers seized more than $330,000, close to 80,000 counterfeit Adderall pills, one firearm, and two industrial pill press machines. A fourth co-conspirator, Gregory Castillo-Rosario, who was arrested in October 2024, ran the Mrjohnson account. Money Laundering Watch
In June 2015 the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) produced a report citing difficulties controlling virtual market places via darknet markets, social media and mobile apps. Some health professionals such as "DoctorX" provide information, advice and drug-testing services on the darknet. Later markets such as Evolution ban "child pornography, services related to murder/assassination/terrorism, prostitution, Ponzi schemes, and lotteries", but allow the wholesaling of credit card data. Personally identifying information, financial information like credit card and bank account information, and medical data from medical data breaches is bought and sold, mostly in darknet markets but also in other black markets. By 2015, some of the most popular vendors had their own dedicated online shops separate from the large marketplaces. Items on a typical centralized darknet market are listed from a range of vendors in an eBay-like marketplace format.
For example, ASAP Market’s closure likely prompted its vendors and buyers to migrate to Abacus, as evidenced by a 20% increase in Abacus’s volume compared with the month before ASAP Market shut down. Cryptocurrency-enabled drug sales also grew by over 19% from 2023 to 2024, reaching nearly USD 2.4 billion in volume. Unlike competitors, such as Archetyp, DrugHub, ASAP Market, and Incognito Market, Abacus operated as a central deposit wallet, multisignature DNM that supported both Bitcoin and Monero. Between June 1 and June 27, 2025 average daily deposits to Abacus were USD 230,000 across 1,400 transactions. In late June 2025, users began reporting withdrawal issues with Abacus Market, which typically indicates an impending exit scam. Abacus’s exit follows the June 16, 2025 law enforcement seizure of Archetyp Market, marking the latest in a series of shutdowns in the Western DNM ecosystem.
According to OFAC, those addresses have been linked to “illicit transactions.” According to Elliptic, a blockchain analysis company, this appears to be the fall of the darknet market leader. The DOJ reports that “Hydra’s money laundering features were so in-demand that some users would set up shell vendor accounts for the express purpose of running money through Hydra’s bitcoin wallets as a laundering technique.” The sanctions follow September and November sanctions of SUEX OTC, S.R.O. and CHATEX, two virtual currency exchanges operated out of Moscow that allegedly facilitated transactions for ransomware actors.
With frequent law enforcement takedowns, exit scams, and rising user caution, many platforms have disappeared, while others have adapted by adopting stricter security measures, multisig escrow, and enhanced vendor screening. Even if a market has strong encryption and escrow, its operators could vanish. For example, AlphaBay Market – once the largest dark web marketplace – was seized by US and international law enforcement in 2017.

Starting in May 2022, it’s grown into a strong player with 25,000+ listings and $4 million monthly trades across BTC, XMR, LTC, and USDT, nabbing a 7% share of the darknet scene. This means that of the 144 million inhabitants of Russia, 69% had access to drugs from Hydra in their city or village at the time when our data were collected. Figure 4 shows the share of three major drug categories as a proportion of all drug listings within each district of Moscow. Histograms of quantity distribution for most frequent drugs in unique instantaneous listings. However, because the definition of a listing is substantially different on Hydra compared to most other darknet markets, a more meaningful comparison may be the number of sellers on the platform.
