This partnership would go on to heavily influence the 1960s, as this lab produced over 4 million 300μg doses of Orange Sunshine LSD. Sand agreed to finance a new lab for producing LSD in exchange for Tim Scully’s knowledge of Owsley Stanley’s process. As fate would have it, police raided Scully’s Denver lab in 1968, and while he managed to escape arrest, he was out of a lab. It was more of a loose organization that supported individuals with a shared interest in exploring the spiritual and philosophical implications of psychedelic experiences. The nickname “The Alchemist” was a nod to Sand’s ability to turn base materials into something valuable, much like the legendary alchemists of ancient times who sought to transmute lead into gold.

From that moment on, he knew that his life’s work would be to make psychedelic drugs widely available. The bust also uncovered six million dollars' worth of designer drugs such as MDMA, and hundreds of thousands of dollars in laboratory equipment. Customers enjoy the story of the Brotherhood of Eternal Love and its quest to spread peace, love, and acid in the 1960s, with one customer noting it's full of twists and turns.
“I did 25 interviews over the course of seven years, and all during that time I kept trying to get to Mike and Carol. “Plenty of the great writers and artists and scientists have taken acid, and now they’re starting to admit it.” “In the drug business, money is always the motivator. For them, it was never about the money, which it usually is with drug dealers.” These people really truly believed in changing the world and making it a better place.

Later Life
Scully immediately ingratiated himself to Stanley by volunteering to assist with his electronics work, rigging up PAs for early Dead concerts and Ken Kesey’s freaky “acid trip” parties. He has self-diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, but on acid, he loosened up. It consists, he says, of “thousands of massively hyperlinked PDF files,” which he hopes to donate to a university library someday. Scully, who now hunkers down in a remote cabin near Mendocino, is lanky and balding, with big round glasses and a trim gray beard that makes him look a bit like a wizard.

LSD was first synthesized in 1938 by a Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann, when he accidentally absorbed the substance and discovered its powerful hallucinogenic effects. So buckle up, throw on some dead, and take a trip back in time to the 1960’s with our throwback to the OG of cool of Orange Sunshine. The blotter art pictured here is nod to the original Orange Sunshine LSD that became synonymous within the California psychedelic scene of the 1960s. Preserving The Ancient Art Of Handcrafting Books
LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) in particular has been illegal since 1968. When I drive by 2209 Delmar, I'll always think of acid and the early 1970's. So anyway, thanks to the makers of "The Sunshine Makers" for shedding light on a piece of history of my city that I did not know existed and giving me a new adventure to track down. These arrests along with LSD evangelist Timothy Leary (who Richard Nixon claimed was the most dangerous man in America) in the 1970's brought an end to the psychedelic revolution.

When I finally started working with Mike and Carol Randall, Travis Ashbrook, and Ron and Wendy Stark, I saw how much this was really a story about friendships and relationships. “I thought it was lush and sexy, adventurous and fun, and I loved all those aspects of it. “When I started this, I thought it was just a really cool story about surfers who were smuggling and making LSD in this idyllic beach town community,” said Kirkley. Like any urban legend, the story of Orange Sunshine (the name of the Brotherhood’s legendary brand of L) suffered from the game of telephone over the years, and most involved were secretive and protective about the truth. The Brotherhood’s name and actions have been sensationalized ever since, and over 50 years later, William A. Kirkley tells their story in the feature documentary film, Orange Sunshine.

He is also the author of several books on national security, the media, and the war on drugs. Loaded with little-known historical mots, this is an excellent chronicle of a piece of history unlikely to be repeated.” ―Booklist“A fascinating read for any audience and essential history for anyone interested in the roots of psychedelia.” ―Kirkus Reviews“His book is a roller-coaster ride through many of the Brotherhood's biggest smuggling adventures, and also provides hilarious details into daily life in Dodge City. By this time, only Sand was still actively making psychedelics in a St. Louis townhouse.

- Sand continued to explore other substances, including peyote cactus, DMT, and marijuana, and immersed himself in the philosophies surrounding consciousness expansion with psychedelic drugs.

Sand spent time in India with the Guru Rajneesh before finding his way to British Columbia, Canada where he began to manufacture LSD again. Scully was arrested at the Napa Airport in May 1969 on charges stemming from the previous lab in Denver that had been shut down. The Brotherhood of Eternal Love helped spread their Orange Sunshine around the United States, Europe, India, and even as far as American Soldiers in Vietnam. The LSD that was made in Windsor came from one pound of lysergic acid that had originally been made in Italy, but had been purchased in London by Scully. LSD is manufactured from lysergic acid, which is produced by the ergot fungus that grows on rye and other grains. Scully and Sand chose a secluded farmhouse obscured by trees in Windsor to set up their lab.
Brotherhood foot soldiers passed out handfuls of the tablets to communes, at Grateful Dead concerts, and at love-ins up and down the coast of California and beyond. With that said, most standard drug tests used by corporations or government agencies don’t test for LSD. Early studies suggest similar timelines for ALD-52 and other lysergamides.

The concentration of drug in plasma was determined serially over the subsequent 8 hours. The biliary metabolites of (14)C-iso-LSD in the rat have been studied and been shown to be similar to those produced from (14)C-LSD, namely 13- and 14-hydroxy-iso-LSD and their glucuronic acid conjugates and 2-oxo-iso-LSD. Unlike the rat and guinea pig the glucuronic acid conjugates of 13- and 14-hydroxy-LSD were only present in small amounts. In the rat and guinea pig the major metabolites were the glucuronic acid conjugates of 13- and 14-hydroxy-LSD which were found in both urine and bile. The metabolites identified were 13- and 14-hydroxy-LSD and their glucuronic acid conjugates, 2-oxo-LSD, de-ethyl LSD and a naphthostyril derivative. The reaction was quenched at various time points, and the aliquots were extracted using liquid partitioning and analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.
There’s no lack of incident to this stranger-than-fiction tale, from the Brotherhood’s close relationship with psychedelic guru Timothy Leary (they were directly involved in later breaking him out of prison) to one major character’s tragic death by overdose. Closer to home, Laguna Beach police chief Neil Purcell (still unamused a half-century later) made it his business to crack down on what he suspected was a massive operation right under his nose, though he had a surprisingly tough time convincing state and federal authorities. President Lyndon B. Johnson, then President Nixon and Gov. Reagan, prioritized fighting a “drug scourge” that no longer affected just society’s fringe, but also middle-of-the-road taxpayers’ own children.
What is the difference between Orange Sunshine versus any other acid? I always hear the stories about my grandparents tripping Orange Sunshine in the 70s, and other people tripping it. I’m glad that the film makes our story accessible to everyone, so they can have some sense of what we were up to. How does it feel to see your life history play out in the film?

Sand was driven by idealism and spiritualism and bent on bringing the psychedelic experience to the masses. Scully was a sharp scientist who knew the formula to make lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) and had a method to produce and tablet it for distribution. Both men were idealists who thought that if everyone would just drop a little acid, the world would be a better place. Netflix recently made "The Sunshine Makers" available for streaming. The goal is to provide high quality content to our readers. Unfortunately Scully’s reputation as one of the major acid manufacturers of the hippie era finally caught up with him and he spent several years in prison during the ‘70s.
It’s an important homecoming, in no small part because New Zealand’s regulatory landscape is somewhat friendlier to researchers wanting to work with “high-risk” class-A drugs like methamphetamine, cocaine, and, yes, LSD. There, he met Robin Carhart-Harris, a researcher who had pioneered recent brain neuroimaging work, exploring how, exactly, psychedelics affect brain chemistry. Witnessing the changes in clinical — and cultural — attitudes toward psychedelics over the past decade, he knew he had the opportunity, and the knowledge, to get in on the action. “Nick laughed and literally said, ‘I’ll teach you how to make drugs with wheelbarrows and shovels.’”
